You & I terms of use
Last updated: 18 October 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and South Star Companion ("we", "us"), the New Zealand business that makes the You & I app. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. Please also read our privacy policy and safety page.
1. Who can use You & I
- You must be at least 13. If you're under 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission, and some features (like the 18+ chat style and video ads) aren't available to you.
- You're responsible for your account and for keeping your sign-in details safe.
2. Your agent is an AI
- Your agent is an artificial intelligence, not a person. It can be wrong, misunderstand you, or say something unexpected.
- It is not a doctor, therapist, lawyer or financial adviser, and it is not an emergency service. If you're in danger or crisis, contact local emergency services or a helpline (see our safety page).
- Pictures, selfies and other content your agent makes are created by AI and are for fun and personal use.
3. Using You & I respectfully
Don't use the app to:
- break the law, or help anyone else break it;
- harass, bully, threaten or impersonate anyone;
- share sexual content involving anyone under 18 (we report this to the authorities), or share anyone's intimate images without consent;
- share hateful, violent or graphic content in moments, drawings or messages;
- try to break, overload, copy or misuse the app, its AI, or other people's accounts.
We may remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules.
4. What you share
- You own what you write, say, draw and upload. You give us permission to store and process it only to run the app for you, including showing moments, drawings and messages to the friends you choose.
- Only share things you have the right to share. Friends can report content they think breaks these rules, and you can hide, report or block anyone.
- Drawings used as your agent's picture are checked automatically, because friends can see them.
5. You & I Plus and payments
- The app is free to use. You & I Plus is an optional subscription, billed monthly or yearly through the App Store or Google Play, at the price shown before you buy.
- Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Cancel any time at least 24 hours before the renewal date in your App Store or Google Play account settings; Plus continues until the end of the period you've paid for.
- New accounts get a free 7-day Plus trial. It ends automatically and doesn't charge you.
- Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under New Zealand consumer law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act where it applies.
- Plus allowances (like chats per day, premium voice time and pictures per month) are fair-use limits and may change; we'll tell you in the app before a change reduces them.
- On iPhone, Apple's standard licence agreement also applies to your use of the app.
6. Ads
Adults on the free plan can choose to watch a short video ad for extra chats. Ads are shown by Google AdMob, are never personalised, and are never shown to anyone under 18 or to Plus members.
7. Robots and other devices
If you connect a robot or device with You & I Connect, it talks as your agent using your account. You're responsible for the devices you connect and who can use them. You can disconnect a device in the app at any time.
8. Changes and ending your account
- We keep improving the app, so features may change. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll let you know in the app.
- You can delete your account at any time (My agent → Delete my account). This deletes your data as described in our privacy policy. If you have a subscription, cancel it in your app store too.
- We may suspend or close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms.
9. Our responsibility
We work hard to keep You & I safe and working, but it's provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we aren't responsible for indirect losses, or for decisions you make based on what the AI says, and our total responsibility is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the problem. Nothing here limits rights you have under New Zealand law that can't be limited.
10. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. If you live elsewhere, you may also have rights under your local consumer laws.
